- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-
- You will need at least 822KB of available hard disk space if you
- intend to copy all of the drivers from the SuperDisk.
-
-
- INSTALLING A NETWORK DRIVER
-
- Follow the instructions contained in the installation document
- associated with the driver you wish to install. For example, if you
- are installing the Novell NetWare DOS ODI Workstation driver,
- review the INSTALL.DOC contained in the same subdirectory for driver
- installation instructions.

-
- PCI LOCAL BUS SPECIFICATION v2.0 COMPATIBILITY
-
- Because PCI is a relatively new industry specification, there are a
- number of compatibility issues which may affect the successful
- installation of any PCI adapter in your computer. SMC urges you to
- contact the manufacturer of your computer to determine if your BIOS
- correctly supports the features of the PCI Local Bus Specification
- (v2.0).
-
- Many early versions of PCI BIOS do not properly support the PCI
- specification. If you have an early PCI BIOS version, your computer
- may hang when a LAN driver attempts to load. This problem can
- normally be resolved with a BIOS upgrade from your computer
- motherboard manufacturer.
-
- PCI Local Bus Compatibility Warning Message
- (ODI Driver Only)
-
- When loading an ODI driver, you may receive the following
- warning message:
-
- "This machine host to PCI bridge has a known bug.
- Driver limits DC21040 bursts as a workaround."
-
- This message indicates that your computer does not correctly support
- the PCI Local Bus Specification (v2.0). The SMC driver will function
- in this environment, but you are urged to contact the manufacturer of
- your computer to determine if your BIOS correctly supports the
- features of the PCI Local Bus Specification (v2.0).
-
-
- SUPPORTED PLATFORMS
-
- SMC has developed a comprehensive list of compatible PCI platforms
- to assist you in determining whether your computer properly supports
- the PCI specification. This constantly updated list is available
- via EliteFax, SMC's fax-on-demand system. To have this list faxed
- directly to you, call (touch-tone) 800/SMC-8329 (U.S.A. and Canada)
- or 516/435-6107 (elsewhere) and request document number 2437.
-
-
- PCI COMPUTERS WITHOUT SELF-CONFIGURING FEATURES
-
- Some PCI computers are not self-configuring. In such computers, you
- may have to perform some or all of the following functions by
- motherboard jumper changes and/or BIOS commands:
-
- The PCI slot must be configured to support bus-mastering.
-
- The PCI slot must be configured to support INTA.
-
- PCI INTA must be assigned to a free IRQ (interrupt) number.
-
- Consult your computer manual for information on changing motherboard
- jumper settings and BIOS SETUP parameters for use with PCI adapters.
-
-
- EMM386 MEMORY-MANAGEMENT UTILITY
-
- EMM386 v4.48 or Earlier
-
- If you are using EMM386 v4.48 or earlier (provided with DOS v6.21
- and earlier), upgrade to EMM386 v4.49 by obtaining DOS v6.22 or later,
- or use a different memory manager. Otherwise, incompatibilities in
- EMM386 may cause your computer to hang when a LAN driver attempts to
- load. To determine your DOS version, type VER and press Enter at the
- DOS prompt.
-
- Memmaker and EMM386
-
- Using the DOS v6.21 or v6.22 Memmaker program may cause system
- reboots. Selecting Memmaker's Aggressive memory scanning option will
- cause Memmaker to specify HIGHSCAN as an option parameter to EMM386
- in the CONFIG.SYS file. The HIGHSCAN option may cause EMM386 to map
- memory into the F000:0 BIOS space used by the system BIOS. In this
- instance, EMM386 does not recognize that the BIOS may be using the
- entire 64 KB range from F000:0 to F000:FFFF. To resolve this problem,
- do not select the Aggressive memory scan option on Memmaker.
-
-
- SUPERDISK FORMAT
-
- The driver files on your SMC SuperDisk are provided in an
- uncompressed format to facilitate installation.
-
- Each of the SuperDisk subdirectories contains a driver
- installation document (typically called INSTALL.DOC) that explains
- how to install the driver. Please use an ASCII text editor to
- review this document before installing drivers.
-
-
- SUPERDISK CONTENTS
-
- Some of the files and directories contained on this SuperDisk
- include:
-
- README.DOC
-
- This file.
-
- DOS_ODI directory
-
- Open data-link interface driver to be used with ODI protocol stacks.
-
- MSLANMAN directory
-
- DOS and OS2 Microsoft LAN Manager drivers.
-
- NDIS directory
-
- DOS and OS/2 NDIS drivers to be used with NDIS-compliant
- network operating systems and protocol stacks. Subdirectories
- contain documentation and .INI files for specific network
